Holyrood Tavern, Edinburgh
The redevelopment of the much-loved Holyrood Tavern in Edinburgh is Fuller Thomson's latest venture, whose portfolio also includes The Jute café bar at the DCA in Dundee, Nobles in Edinburgh, and Ocean Kitchen Bar & Grill in Leith, amongst others. Closed for almost two years, 3D8 were appointed to design the interior of the bar and the project was designed and completely refurbished within an impressive four weeks.
The Holyrood's location was key in the development of the bar's interior. Located in the old town of Edinburgh it is surrounded by history, but at the same time, the area has an edge and feels somewhat beatnik, partly due to its close proximity to St. Mary's Street, which is home to lots of quirky independent retailers. The client's vision was to open a bar that celebrated beer and that culturally felt right for its location.
All the traditional elements of the interior remain completely intact. The successful integration of new statement pieces, in particular the 5 metre mirrored back bar gantry, make the bar feel modern but not to the point where it makes you feel uncomfortable. Despite the overhaul, the bar interior still manages to retain a 'rough around the edges' look that only enhances its appeal. Overall, the bar is comfortable, down to earth and a nice place to be.
