BBC Pop-up Symphony

7 November 2011

Our installations caught the eye at London’s St Pancras International on 2 November. They were, however, slightly outshone by the not inconsiderable presence of the BBC Symphony Orchestra performing a surprise “Pop-Up” rendition of the finale of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.

Passengers were serenaded by the full orchestra and massed choir, and invited to join in the singing – all led by the BBC SO Principal Guest Conductor David Robertson.

The pop up event ushered in a month-long celebration of Symphony on BBC Radio 3 from 4 November to 2 December, giving listeners the chance to hear complete performances of over 60 symphonies, including each symphony featured in the BBC Four series, from Haydn to Shostakovich.

Throughout the month famous musicians and musical enthusiasts will share their favourites including Joan Armatrading, Brian Blessed, James Naughtie, Will Self, and Rufus Wainwright.
